Emerging Trends

I was recently at an incredible seminar which has changed my thinking on so many levels. But one of the talks which really captured my attention explained Emerging Trends. These trends affect us all and are the key to understanding how the world is changing. They are as follows:

1. Climate Change -Yes, we all know it’s happening. There are still those, (my dad included) who like to argue about why it’s happening, and that doesn’t really matter. It’s happening, it’s affecting us now, and it will affect us more and more as time goes on.

2. Technology – The speed of technological advancement is compounding at a rate which could be either described as exciting or totally terrifying. You will all have seen a graph similar to this which explains the accelerated rate of growth we are currently experiencing, and it is not likely to slow down any time soon.

3. Baby Boomers – Millennials: 2019 is the year that according to Pew Research the Millennials will surpass the Baby Boomers in size in the United States (72 million Baby Boomers to 73 Million Millennials).

So, what does this mean for you?
Millennials are soon to be at peak earnings (when the turn 40). They are now the biggest generation and they will soon be running the show. And guess what? They think completely differently to Baby Boomers. They care about the climate - passionately. They “get” technology. And they want to live and work very differently to baby boomers. They are more health conscious. They want their work to make an impact. They are less afraid to move around, change jobs. They want to live in urban centres, in smaller more diverse accommodation.

This should be affecting everything we do, how we design, how we plan our environments, as this is now what matters to the dominant generation.

We recently became the Architect for Queenstown’s First Urban Village, and I am so excited about it, as it exemplifies all of these emerging trends. This is how Millennials want to live and as they are now the dominant generation, it means this will soon be how the majority of people want to live.

QUV’s values are “People developing places on purpose”. This means low energy, sustainable homes, with access to public transport. The ability to walk/bike use the proposed ferry or gondola terminal, allowing easy living without even owning a car.

Terraced townhouses ranging from 2-4 bedroom main residences with optional studio or 1 bedroom attached apartments. All built using Passive House technologies, to allow for high quality, low energy, warm healthy homes.

You get instant community, something which has been so lacking in the current generation, where isolation, is more of a theme.

And to top it all off, there will be income earning assets such as a café/office/apartment owned by the body corporate to further enhance the financial sustainability of this development.

If you are interested in being at the start of this sea-change, there are opportunities not just to become an owner and live in this awesome new community, there are also opportunities to invest in the start of a new trend.
